Plot Overview

Ryan Brenner (Ben Barnes) is a free-spirited, modern-day train hopper and nomadic folk musician traveling across the United States with his guitar, playing cover songs and dreaming of eventually recording his own music in Portland.

During a stop in snowy Ogden, Utah, Ryan briefly crosses paths with Jackie Laurel (Katherine Heigl), a former successful country music singer who recently returned to her hometown. Jackie is navigating a bitter divorce from her wealthy NYC husband while fighting to maintain custody of her young daughter, Lia (Emily Alyn Lind).

When Jackie is knocked down in a minor street accident, Ryan rushes to help her, but his backpack gets stolen in the chaos. Feeling responsible, Jackie invites him to her mother’s home for dinner. Seeing that the roof of the house needs urgent repairs before winter, Ryan offers his handyman skills in exchange for a temporary place to stay.

As they spend time together, a supportive, symbiotic relationship forms: Jackie encourages Ryan to overcome his self-doubt and write his own original music, while Ryan helps Jackie regain her independence and confidence to stand up to her ex-husband.
