Plot Overview
After spending eight months in a mental health facility for bipolar disorder, Pat Solitano Jr. (Bradley Cooper) is released into the care of his parents in Philadelphia. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain optimistic (seeking his “silver lining”), and reconcile with his unfaithful ex-wife, Nikki, despite a restraining order keeping them apart.
His plans take an unexpected turn when he meets Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious young widow dealing with her own recent trauma, depression, and social stigma. A volatile but deeply understanding dynamic quickly develops between them.
Tiffany offers to help Pat bypass the restraining order and deliver a letter to Nikki, but only on one condition: he must become her partner in an upcoming, high-stakes community dance competition. As their rigorous rehearsals progress, Pat is forced to confront his family’s chaotic dynamics—including his father’s (Robert De Niro) obsessive gambling on the Philadelphia Eagles—while slowly realizing that his silver lining might look completely different than he originally imagined.
