SPECIAL REPORT: EDUCATION & COMPASSION — For most parents, a child’s first day of school is a milestone marked by excitement and tears. For Liga and her family, however, watching their daughter Laila prepare for her academic journey once felt like an impossible dream.
Born prematurely in critical condition following severe pregnancy hemorrhages, Laila was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and visual impairment. In her earliest months, she endured a grueling 148-day hospital stay spanning five different specialized facilities before her health stabilized enough to go home.
Upon discharge, the family transitioned into a demanding routine of around-the-clock caregiving. Sleepless nights, complex medical routines, and pervasive anxiety defined daily life for her mother, Liga, who found it almost impossible to imagine entrusting her daughter’s fragile care to anyone else.
“When you have a child with complex needs, your mind never stops thinking about all the things that could happen if you’re not there,” Liga recalled.
Building Trust Through Outreach Care
The family’s reality transformed when they connected with the Acorns Children’s Hospice Outreach Team.
Outreach Nurse Laura began visiting the home, gradually building a strong bond of trust with both Laila and her parents. By delivering professional medical care in a familiar environment, Nurse Laura helped Laila become comfortable socializing with new caregivers while affording Liga a rare, essential sense of relief.
“It’s been life-changing,” Liga shared. “For the first time, I can step away without constantly worrying.”
Beyond clinical assistance, the outreach team supported the family with medical appointment coordination, home care, and emotional encouragement, surrounding Laila with warmth and affection. “She absolutely loves all the cuddles,” Liga smiled.
Preparing for the School Gates
As Laila grew, the prospect of formal education initially filled Liga with apprehension. “I was terrified of sending her to school,” Liga admitted. “But they promised they would help prepare her.”
Through structured monthly daycare visits organized with the support of Acorns, Laila gradually adapted to classroom environments and social settings. Today, she is fully prepared to cross the threshold for her first formal term of school this autumn—a milestone her family once feared would remain forever out of reach.
While Liga jokingly admits she may still spend Laila’s first day waiting nervously outside the school gates, her overall outlook on life has shifted fundamentally. “Before, I worried about ordinary things,” she reflected. “Now we simply live one day at a time, and every day feels like a blessing.”
For Liga, her partner, their son Davis, and little Laila, the outreach support has proved irreplaceable. “We couldn’t imagine life without Acorns,” Liga emphasized. “They’ve become like family. There’s simply no one else who offers this kind of support—not just for Laila, but for all of us.”
