ENTERTAINMENT & FILM REPORT — Thirty-five years after its initial theatrical debut, Kathryn Bigelow’s seminal 1991 action thriller Point Break—starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze—is set to return to the big screen in a newly restored 4K presentation.
The special anniversary event, presented by Resurgence Media Group, Saga Arts, and Fathom Entertainment, will feature limited theatrical screenings scheduled for August 16 and August 19.
Enhancing the special presentation, screenings will feature an exclusive introduction by surfing icon Matt Archbold. Archbold served as Swayze’s surfing double during production and was instrumental in teaching the primary cast members how to navigate the waves.
“Few films have built a following as loyal as Point Break’s,” stated Shannah Miller, Vice President of Marketing at Fathom Entertainment. “Thirty-five years after it first hit theatres, this newly restored 4K version gives that devoted following exactly what they’ve been asking for: Bodhi, Johnny Utah and those legendary surfing and skydiving sequences, back where they belong on the big screen.”
An Unforgettable Cultural Touchstone
The 1991 cult classic follows a notorious gang of bank robbers known as the “Ex-Presidents,” who execute high-stakes heists while wearing rubber masks of former U.S. leaders Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Believing the perpetrators are tied to the local surfing community, the FBI dispatches rookie agent Johnny Utah (Reeves) undercover to infiltrate the beach scene. However, as Utah forms a complex bond with the charismatic, thrill-seeking surfer Bodhi (Swayze), his professional loyalties are pushed to the brink.
While a 2015 feature remake failed to capture the cultural impact of Bigelow’s original masterpiece, interest in the Point Break universe has remained vibrant.
The Unproduced Sequel and a New Era for TV
Original screenwriter W. Peter Iliff previously developed a concept for a direct sequel centered on Johnny Utah’s daughter—a former Olympic snowboarder who joins the FBI after overcoming knee injury and addiction, eventually going undercover to investigate a radical eco-terrorist group while uncovering the truth behind her father’s mysterious disappearance.
While that specific concept was never produced, expanding the franchise remains a priority. A brand-new Point Break television series is currently in development at AMC. Set 35 years after the events of the original 1991 film, the upcoming series will center on a high-stakes heist crew with deep ties to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang.
