Plot Overview

Ethan Renner (Kevin Costner) is a veteran, terminally ill CIA operative who decides to retire from his dangerous career to reconnect with his estranged wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and teenage daughter Zooey (Hailee Steinfeld) in Paris. Knowing he only has months to live due to brain cancer, Ethan hopes to make up for years of absence.

However, an elite and mysterious CIA assassin named Vivi Delay (Amber Heard) offers him a deal: in exchange for completing one final high-stakes mission—tracking down an international terrorist known as “The Wolf”—she will give him an experimental drug that could extend his life.

Ethan finds himself juggling two absurdly conflicting lives simultaneously: executing brutal interrogations and firefights across Paris while trying to teach Zooey how to ride a bicycle, giving her relationship advice, and dealing with side effects from the experimental injection.

Key Themes & Highlights

  • Action Meets Family Drama: Written by EuropaCorp founder Luc Besson (Taken, The Professional), the film blends signature European slick action sequences with lighthearted family comedy.

  • Kevin Costner’s Action Turn: Similar to Liam Neeson’s late-career action revival in Taken, Costner steps into the role of an aging, lethal operative balancing ruthless tactical skills with suburban parenting struggles.

  • Parisian Backdrops: The movie features extensive location shooting across Paris, using classic European architecture as a contrast for high-speed car chases and gun battles.
