David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom (2010) is a chilling, slow-burn Australian crime masterpiece. Unlike Hollywood crime dramas that glamorize the lifestyle with high-octane heist sequences and slick style, this film treats criminality as a toxic, claustrophobic domestic trap.
It is loosely inspired by the real-life Pettingill crime family and the 1988 Walsh Street police shootings in Melbourne.
The Plot: A Trap with No Exit
The story is told through the eyes of Joshua “J” Cody (James Frecheville), an emotionally detached 17-year-old. When his mother overdoses in the opening scene, J has no choice but to call his estranged grandmother, Janine “Smurf” Cody (Jacki Weaver).
Smurf welcomes him into her suburban Melbourne home, which serves as the headquarters for her three armed-robber sons:
