Plot Overview
The Highwaymen flips the script on the traditional Bonnie and Clyde narrative. Instead of focusing on the glamorous, media-hyped criminal duo, the film follows the untold true story of the two legendary, retired Texas Rangers who were brought in to track them down and end their violent crime spree.
Set in 1934 during the height of the Great Depression, Texas Governor Ma Ferguson (Kathy Bates) reluctantly allows the recruitment of former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson). The Rangers had been disbanded years earlier, and both men are now past their prime, struggling with age and the ghosts of their violent pasts.
Armed with old-school detective instincts and vintage firepower, Hamer and Gault set out across the American South. Unlike the FBI and local police who rely on modern technology, the two veteran lawmen use their deep understanding of criminal psychology and tracking to predict Bonnie and Clyde’s movements, culminating in the famous, fatal ambush in Louisiana.
