Finding Hope in the Darkest Hours: How a Children’s Hospice Transformed One Family’s Journey After a Traumatic Home Birth

SPECIAL REPORT: HEALTHCARE & COMPASSION — What was intended to be a joyous occasion at home swiftly escalated into a parent’s ultimate nightmare for Keri and Andy, when their newborn son, Patrick, arrived unexpectedly in a breech position before emergency medical teams could reach their doorstep.

Deprived of immediate medical intervention during the critical moments of delivery, the traumatic birth resulted in a devastating neurological injury for the newborn.

“Everything happened so fast,” Keri recalled. “I never imagined that anything could be wrong.”

When paramedics arrived, Patrick was rushed to the hospital while his agonized parents endured hours of agonizing waiting before being granted permission to see him. As Patrick lay stabilized under a maze of life-support equipment, monitors, and tubes, physicians presented a grim prognosis, warning the family to prepare for the worst.

“You hear words like ‘brain injury’ and ‘seizures,’ but nothing really prepares you for what they mean,” Keri shared.

Overcoming the Stigma of Hospice Care

Patrick was subsequently diagnosed with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)—a severe form of brain injury triggered by oxygen deprivation and restricted blood flow to the brain around the time of birth.

As the medical team worked to stabilize the infant, doctors recommended a referral to Acorns Children’s Hospice. Initially, the suggestion filled Keri with dread.

“When I heard the words ‘children’s hospice,’ I thought it was a place where children went to die,” she admitted. “I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to believe we belonged there.”

However, the family’s perception shifted completely upon their arrival. Keri described entering the facility as “being wrapped in warmth.”

Her lingering doubts evaporated during a pivotal, unscripted moment. While searching for the restroom, Keri observed a nurse gently singing songs and speaking softly to a young patient in her care. “She didn’t even know I was watching,” Keri reflected. “That’s when I realized this was somewhere truly special.”

Tailored Care and Advocating for Community Support

Far from being solely a place for end-of-life care, Acorns provides Patrick with comprehensive, individualized medical support and symptom management. Through specialized rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, and sensory play activities tailored to his complex needs, Patrick continues to achieve developmental strides alongside his dedicated care team.

For Keri and Andy, the hospice has grown into an indispensable sanctuary. “Life without hospice care would be impossible,” Keri emphasized. “I can’t imagine families like ours facing this journey without that support.”

Recognizing the vital lifeline such facilities provide, Keri now actively advocates for sustainable, long-term funding for children’s hospice services, aiming to ensure that other families enduring similar trauma have access to identical compassionate resources.

“What I know for certain,” Keri stated, “is that we’ll always need Acorns.”

Patrick’s journey stands as a profound testament to human resilience and the transformative power of specialized care—proving that sometimes, the very places we fear the most become the sanctuaries that help us heal.
